Maybe my aspirations can be a little too lofty.
Owen needs warm hands so I said to myself, "Hey, I could make him some mittens." So I went to the store and bought some fleece and traced his hand on a piece of trace paper. --I've seen this done a dozen places-- it's a piece of cake, right?-- Then I cut out the pattern and used it to cut out the fabric. And sewed the two sides together.
Umm. . . it was a little too tight, more like a spandex glove--but no problem, just try again a bit bigger.
I turned the fabric as to get the most economical use of the 1/4 yard I bought. So because I wasn't thinking I ended up with a glove that was bigger in size but wouldn't even fit on his hand this time because the stretch was now going lengthwise instead of width-wise.
After two attempts Owen was ready to throw in the towel. He shook his head sadly and said, "Mom, you aren't a very good sewer."
Oh, I was crushed! My son had lost all confidence in my abilities! But undaunted I turned the fabric back the other direction, cut out a second set of the larger size--with the stretch once again going side to side--and sewed them together.
Success at last. A pair for Jonas and a pair for Owen. Now hopefully Owen will just forget how may tries it took to get us here.
